Ropes and Slings
Ropes and slings come in many different shapes and sizes. The exact requirements for you will depend on various factors, some of these factors may be how new you are to the sport of climbing and the style of climbing you undertake. Many people enjoy starting their experience on an indoor climbing wall, if you do the majority of your climbing indoors you may well choose a slightly shorter rope than you may use outdoors. The most popular rope lengths are normally 30 metres, 50 metres and 60 metres, there are other options available but most people choose within these three lengths. The different rope diameter’s will give you a choice of pliability (how easy it is to tie knots), durability, weight, impact force and strength. Your budget and main usage will inform your decision as well as friends recommendation. The prices will also vary if a rope has received more dry treatment processes in manufacture, which give the rope a potentially longer life span in use and storage.
The main changes to slings over the years have been an increase in strength with less weight and bulk required in the sling material. The widths of slings have gradually come down although many people still like the original 25mm wide slings for ease of use and durability, however you can now purchase dyneema slings down to 8mm wide with similar strength to the 25mm slings. The type of sling you have learned your skills with, weight and bulk when carrying and the lengths will all be a factor. We keep slings across the range from 8mm to 25mm wide and 10cm to 400cm long.
