Merrell brand and the emergence of Moab
Merrell was established in 1981 by Clark Matis and John Schweizer of Rossignol, the ski company, with the launch of a new brand of hiking boot. In collaboration with Randal Ivan Merrell, who had been producing custom boots for $500 a pair, in 1982 Clark Matis designed a more affordable high-performance boot, the Moab. Since its inception, the Moab has been worn by almost 20 million outdoor enthusiasts.Merrell has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Wolverine Worldwide since 1997. Why should you choose walking shoes with a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane?
GORE-TEX is a breathable, waterproof fabric found in high-performance walking boots and jackets. GORE-TEX stops rain from getting in while allowing perspiration to escape. That’s smart! But how does it do it?There are two layers of nylon with a layer of microporous Teflon® between them. The Teflon® keeps the rain out because it is a liquid made up of droplets, each of which is around 20,000 times bigger than the holes in GORE-TEX, so they can’t get through. Meanwhile the Teflon® allows sweat, which is water in the form of a gas, to drift out through the GORE-TEX by the process of diffusion. Clever stuff.

• Blended EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) contoured footbed. An EVA footbed has special cushioning properties that gently absorb every step. It is a rubber-like plastic with a high resistant of heat and cold, and is highly durable. The footbed also has a zonal arch and heel support.

• Vibram® TC5+ sole. This is a slip-resistant grip that works against wet surfaces. The lug pattern, or tread, on a Vibram TC5+ sole has a depth of 5mm which provides stability against a range of different types of terrain.
