Combatting extreme conditions in Montane’s Phase XPD waterproof jacket

It was the famous British fell walker and guidebook author Alfred Wainwright who once said: “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. At BCH Camping we believe he was bang on the money when he wrote this in his 1973 book, Coast to Coast.
When it comes to hiking in extreme weather conditions, as long as you have the appropriate experience and common sense, safety equipment and the best weatherproof clothing, there is no reason to be put off getting out for a hike on the fells, enjoying some winter mountaineering or climbing in all weathers.
Of course, accessories such as hatsgloves and thermal clothing will all help to make the experience of walking in extreme weather conditions more palatable, but it is the waterproof, insulated jacket that makes all the difference.
The Montane men’s Phase XPD waterproof jacket was designed for extreme weather conditions, and is hugely popular with BCH Camping customers.

The Montane men’s Phase XPD waterproof jacket

Montane pitch the Phase XPD waterproof jacket as suitable for mountaineering, expeditions and ski touring, so this jacket certainly stands up to icy cold conditions. It has a ‘full suite’ of technical features:

Waterproofing

The 40 Denier GORE-TEX Pro breathable technology in the main body of the jacket and the 80 Denier GORE-TEX Pro across the shoulders, hips and elbows are what make this jacket so reliably waterproof. The higher rate denier in these areas was incorporated into the design to avoid compromising the waterproof performance of the GORE-TEX due to rubbing against rucksack straps.
This is where the top brands excel – the innovation and insight to increase the performance of the jacket where needed.

Helmet-compatible hood

Protecting your head from rain and wind while hiking and climbing is essential for a productive and enjoyable outdoor experience. In extreme weather, a bog-standard hood won’t do. Montane’s designers have come up with a fully adjustable, rollaway hood that also accommodates a climbing helmet.
They’ve added in a three-point quick release adjustment, and a stiffened peak that helps to keep the rain off your face. The attention to detail in just one element of this jacket demonstrates the designers’ understanding of what outdoor enthusiasts need.

Articulated arms

This isn’t a robotics reference! Montane have designed articulated sleeves for this jacket to accommodate high reach movements and reduce hem lift. This allows you to move your arms freely in any direction as you move, stretch, lean forward or to the side.
Many outdoor pursuits are easier to perform without restriction of the arms, so this design feature is invaluable to anybody keen on being active, regardless of the weather.

Seam taped construction

The fully seam taped construction of the jacket prevents water from leaking through the seams to the inside.

YKK AquaGuard® zips

YKK are industry leaders in zips and fastenings for outdoor and sports clothing. YKK’s AquaGuard is a water repellent zip that is PU (polyurethane) laminated on the reverse of a coil zip. The brand’s VISLON® zip is made of injected plastic elements and is lighter than metal zips of the same size, making it ideal for sports and performance wear.
The Montane men’s Phase XPD waterproof jacket has the following YKK AquaGuard zips:
  • Full-length two-way YKK AquaGuard VISLON front zip with internal storm flap
  • Two-way YKK AquaGuard pit zips that allow for extra ventilation
  • Two zipped hand pockets with YKK AquaGuard VISLON zips
  • External chest pocket with YKK AquaGuard VISLON zip

Internal drop pocket

The internal mesh drop pocket is a welcome feature for storing essentials such as accessories and maps away from driving rain and snow.

Adjustable cuffs

The adjustable, shaped cuffs provide closed sleeves regardless of the thickness of your fleece or top. The cuffs are adjusted using the hook and loop tab system.

Adjustable hem

The hem of the jacket can be adjusted using a cinchable drawcord.

Weight

The weight of the Montane men’s Phase XPD waterproof jacket is 470g for a size Medium.
